How to Choose Your Wedding Cake

Selecting your wedding cake and the bakery to create it can be two of the more difficult decisions you make with regards to your wedding. There are thousands of options and picking one, and then finding a bakery that is willing to do it at the price you have budgeted can take time.

By now hopefully you have already created a budget for your wedding, and have a certain amount of money budgeted for your wedding cake. Keep in mind that the more elaborate your choice, the more expensive your wedding cake, so if cost is truly a factor you will have to be thoughtful in your considerations.

The first step you should take is to begin researching wedding cakes in order to discover just what it is that you want. Look at bridal magazines, and online for pictures of different kinds of wedding cakes. Cut out and print the pictures you like as the case may be. Have several choices to begin with, because then you can begin to narrow your choices down. If you limit yourself to only clipping say ten pictures, then you may miss out on a wedding cake picture that you like even better than the ten you originally chose. So, don't be afraid to go wild and clip as many pictures of wedding cakes as you like. You can then go through them a second time and narrow your choices down.

Once you have narrowed your choices of wedding cakes down, then you can begin begin doing research to see what cakes like the ones you think you may want cost. Put a sticky on each picture with the price you think from your research the cake will be. If it is a higher price than your budget, then set it aside. Do this until you have at least two or three wedding cakes that you think will be within your budget. These are the first batch of pictures you will take to local bakeries to see about having one of them made for your wedding. Your second batch will be the pile that you thought was above budget. Go ahead and bring those with you too, especially if your favorite ones wound up in this pile. Who knows you might get lucky and find a picture of a similar wedding cake at one of the bakers you are going to visit and interview. Also possibly you will find a baker that is willing to do your favorite wedding cake for what you can afford. Hey it could happen!

There are other things that you should consider as well. For example, some couples have a mock wedding cake created and then serve guests from sheet cakes that were baked specifically for the occasion. Your mock wedding cake can have just a few tiers, and it will look just as beautiful as a real wedding cake. Also, no one will be any the wiser if you have the sheet cakes cut in the kitchen and then brought out to the guests. This can be the perfect solution for those couples on a tight budget.

Another thing you will want to think about when it comes to your wedding cake is the wedding cake topper. You need to decide if you are going to buy one yourself or just allow the baker to select one. Most couples choose to purchase their own wedding cake topper, especially if they are having a themed wedding. Also, if you have decided to go ahead and have a real and elaborately tiered wedding cake, traditionally the top layer is frozen and preserved for a year and then eaten on the first anniversary. Your topper is something that you can hang onto as a keepsake and another way to remember your special day.

A few final considerations are that you will need to decide if you want a traditional white and gold or silver cake, or if you want your cake to match your wedding colors for example. Wedding cakes can be decorated with all sorts of things as well. There are even edible beads if you want to have beads on your cake that match your pearls! You can also decide to have the flowers on the top layers of your cake be either made of frosting or real flowers. That's right, some brides choose to have real flowers to decorate the upper layers of their wedding cakes.

One other less traditional choice for a wedding cake is that you could have a small cake for each table, and have each cake contain a different filling. That way people can move from table to table sampling the different flavors of cakes. This can make for a great way to have your guests mingle and get to know one another, and to meet the demand of many varying tastes.

Whatever final decision you, your budget and the baker come up with, if you follow these suggestions you will be sure to have a wedding cake to remember.
