APACHE WEDDING VOWS

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there will be no loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you. May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead and through all the years, May happiness be your companion and your days together be good and long upon the earth.

Explanation:

Treat yourselves and each other with respect, and remind yourselves often of what brought you together. Give the highest priority to the tenderness, gentleness and kindness that your connection deserves. When frustration, difficulty and fear assail your relationship - as they threaten all relationships at one time or another - remember to focus on what is right between you, not only the part which seems wrong. In this way, you can ride out the storms when clouds hide the face of the sun in your lives - remembering that even if you lose sight of it for a moment, the sun is still there. And if each of you takes responsibility for the quality of your life together, it will be marked by abundance and delight.

BUDDHIST WEDDING VOWS

“In the future, happy occasions will come as surely as the morning. Difficult times will come as surely as the night. When things go joyously, meditate according to the Buddhist tradition. When things go badly, meditate. Meditation in the manner of the Compassionate Buddha will guide your life. To say the words ‘love and compassion’ is easy. But to accept that love and compassion are built upon patience and perseverance is not easy.”

VOWS BY NICHOLAS GORDON

D69

Because I love and cherish you, And want to fill your heart with grace, These things I promise I will do:

I vow to tell you what is true That you might touch whom you embrace Because I love and cherish you.

I vow to put aside my view And paint my portrait from your place: These things I promise I will do.

And when you must your dreams renew, I vow to give you ample space Because I love and cherish you.

I vow to make our battles few And love the child behind the face: These things I promise I will do.

And that we might make one of two, Too deep to know, too vast to trace, Because I love and cherish you, These things I promise I will do.

VOWS BY NICHOLAS GORDON

D70

These things I promise I will do That life may grant you ample grace Because I love and cherish you:

I vow to treasure what is true That I might touch whom I embrace: These things I promise I will do.

I'll build a garden in your view That with sweet fruit will stone replace Because I love and cherish you.

I vow to love each day anew, For love must dance through time and space: These things I promise I will do.

I vow to make your terrors few And then with you those demons face Because I love and cherish you.

And now, as we make one of two, A passage we cannot retrace, These things I promise I will do Because I love and cherish you.

Why You Should Write Your Own Wedding Vows

You've given a lot of thought to what flowers you want for your wedding, what colors, what theme, and hopefully you've considered getting some premarital counseling. But have you thought much about your vows? Many couples don't. In point of fact they usually just let their officiary come up with the wording which generally speaking is a variation of wedding vows that date from the middle ages. Why do couples let this very important part of their ceremony, the promises they make to each other, be dictated by someone else? Only you and your beloved can answer that question, but maybe, at least in some instances it is because it just didn't occur to you to write your own vows. Maybe you didn't know you could. That's also a possibility.

The truth is you can and should write your own wedding vows. Let's face it, the institution of marriage has changed a lot since the middle ages. It is very rare for marriages to be arranged in this modern era, nor do husbands own their wives as they would property anymore. Unlike in the past, a woman does not forfeit her lands and property when she marries, nor is she required to obey her husband in all things. Unfortunately many of traditional vows still reflect those times when women were considered to be second-class citizens and no better than property to be passed from her father to her husband. While this is not always the case, and there are some very beautiful traditional vows, you should rewrite yours to reflect your personal relationship with your soon-to-be spouse.

Wedding vows are the promises that you make to one another and require some forethought ahead of time. If you allow someone else to write your vows for you, you may not even know what you are promising each other. Also, allowing someone else to write your promises that may not even know you, may make your vows to each other feel fake or contrived when it comes to the day of your wedding. While traditional vows can be beautiful as mentioned before, some of the traditional vows are outdated and don't really apply to modern marriage.

So, I'm assuming that by this point you have decided that you would like to write your own wedding vows, but maybe you don't have any idea about how to go about it. Well, not to despair, there are a couple of ways you can write your own wedding vows. The first is to sit down when you have a good block of time and think hard about what your relationship with your beloved means to you. As you do this write down any words or phrases that come to mind that have special meaning to you with regards to your feelings for your beloved. Once you've done this, you can do some research and see how vows have been written and set up by others both from the past and the present. Find a format that you like and then use the words and phrases with that format to write your own vows. This may take you more than one sitting and at least a few hours before you get your vows the way you want them, but it will be well worth it.

Another option for writing your own wedding vows is to use a wedding vow template. This is a template that is basically a list of fill in the blank vows. You can use the words and phrases you came up with in your first list to make your vows more personal if you decide to use this method. There are many wedding vow templates available so make sure you check out more than one, until you find the one that best fits what you have in mind for your vows.

Your wedding vows are one of the most important parts of your wedding. Don't allow others to write them for you, or use vows that are as old as the middle ages and that you aren't even certain exactly what it is you are promising each other. Instead write your own vows and have another wonderful and beautiful memory of the most important day of your life. Your memories will be that much brighter for it!
