What to Look For When Choosing a Bridal Consultant

So you're getting married in six months or next year or whenever and you've decided you want to hire a bridal consultant to help you plan your wedding. You go to the yellow pages and or search online and there are hundreds to choose from. How do you know which one is best for you?

There are actually a number of things you will want to look for when choosing a bridal consultant. Following down this list and making sure the person you choose fits most of them will ensure that you have a beautiful and happy wedding day.

  1. Choose a bridal consultant which has a degree in event planning, and or several years experience. This is not to suggest that you should never choose someone who has just graduated with their degree, but you will more likely be happy with the outcome if you choose someone who has some experience as well as the degree.
  2. Interview your top bridal consultants after you have chosen them by checking online or calling them and setting up an appointment. Make sure the person you're choosing is personable, likes to work with people, and enjoys planning large gatherings. If it is obvious the person is none of these things then move on to your next choice.
  3. Make sure that they are a bridal consultant who will look for the best deals, prices, and services for your wedding. You don't want a bridal consultant who can't follow your budget for example, or who thinks that you are giving him/her free reign to spend as much as they want. This is another reason why setting a budget before you even think about hiring a bridal consultant is a good idea.
  4. Research your bridal consultants before interviewing them. See if you can talk to previous clients. What did they have to say about this particular bridal consultant? Did the bridal consultant handle finances well? Was he/she willing to listen to the couple about what they wanted for their wedding, or was he/she insistent that only he/she knew the right way to plan the event? All of these are important because you want to be able to work with your bridal consultant in a smooth manner.
  5. Find out if the bridal consultant you have chosen is familiar with the customs, and traditions of various ethnic and religious groups. While you yourself may be doing a traditional Christian wedding, this country is made up of hundreds of different ethnicities and religious traditions. If your bridal consultant of choice is versed in some of these others that is a sign that she/he would be a good planner for you as well.
  6. Make sure the bridal consultant of your choice is keeping up with current trends in styles, colors and such. You can do a bit of research prior to going to your interviews first just to be sure you can speak to the bridal consultant intelligently.
  7. Also compare rates for the different bridal consultants. Find out if they have packages which will save you money as well. If you can save on your budget by purchasing a package deal with the bridal consultant, then all the better. You may get a better deal with a bridal consultant that has packages than from someone who charges by the hour.

One thing that you may or may not be aware of is that there are vendors out there who claim that they will act as your wedding consultant if you use their products or services. It is never a good idea to do this. The reason being that they are "vendors" meaning their job is to sell a product or service. Also, keep in mind that while they are planning your wedding, they will also be preparing food if they are a caterer, wrapping gifts and helping executives if they are also a concierge, and watching to see that you are following the church/synagogue/mosque's rules such as no lights on the camera taking wedding pictures for example if they are the ceremony site coordinator. All these people already have a full-time job, they don't have time to effectively coordinate your event as well. Also, in the case of the "use this vendor, or these products and we'll organize your wedding for free," they will jack up their prices to cover the cost of planning your wedding.

This is why it is so important to choose a bridal consultant who is only a bridal consultant and who fits your professional criteria. After all, you are the one paying them to assist you with planning for the most important day of your life!
